In 2006 the government introduced a major change to the way dentists were contracted to provide NHS dental services in England and Wales. This had two major effects:
1. It introduced a fixed price contract with dentists for a fixed amount of work.
2. It simplified the charges for patients and reduced the number of charges from several hundred different items down to just 3.
The three charges cover several bands:
Band 1 covers examination, x-rays and simple scaling. The charge is currently £27.40.
Band 2 covers basic restorative work such as fillings, root fillings and also includes deep scaling treatment and denture additions. The charge is currently £75.30.
Band 3 covers more complicated work involving dental technicians, including crowns and dentures. The charge is currently £326.70.
Urgent treatment covers urgent care required as a result of pain or when the situation needs urgent attention to prevent deterioration. The charge is currently £27.40.
Free treatment. Some treatments are free on the NHS such as suture removal and denture repairs. Also if there was a course of treatment completed within two months previously at the same charge band or higher there should be no charge unless the previous treatment was an urgent treatment.
Emergency appointments are available and we try to see each patient on the same day.
